A researcher can have the right papers and still lose time reconstructing why they mattered. Search results live in browser tabs. PDFs sit in folders. Notes move into a document. References arrive later. By then, a confident sentence may be several steps away from the passage that justified it.

Rivul brings those steps into one research workspace. It connects scholarly discovery, a private PDF library, evidence aware assistance, citations, manuscript checks, and export. The benefit is continuity: the source stays close enough to inspect while the argument develops.

A citation is useful only when the writer can return to the evidence behind it.

The real problem is the handoff

Research software is usually organized by task. One service finds papers, another stores PDFs, another formats references, and another hosts the manuscript. Each tool can work well on its own. Friction appears when a decision has to travel between them.

A useful search result needs to become a readable source. A useful passage needs to become a note or claim. A claim needs the correct citation. A finished draft needs a final check and a portable file. Rivul treats that sequence as one workflow.

Begin with sources, not an empty prompt

Rivul's scholarly search includes citation signals and source metadata, and useful papers can move directly into a research workspace or library. Search is only one way in: researchers can also upload PDFs, fetch records by DOI or arXiv identifier, import BibTeX, or bring in a Zotero library.

This makes the starting point concrete. Instead of asking a general purpose model to recall a field, the researcher builds a visible set of sources that can be opened, organized, cited, and checked.

Turn a PDF collection into working material

A saved paper is useful only when its contents are accessible. Rivul extracts text from PDFs and can use OCR when a document needs it. The reader supports search, page navigation, document outlines, annotations, quoted passages, citation copying, and questions about the paper.

The library keeps metadata, tags, reading status, and duplicate handling in the same place. For Zotero users, Rivul can import eligible library records and push records back to Zotero. That creates a practical bridge from an established reference collection to the manuscript workflow. Ask with the evidence in reach

Research questions change as reading progresses. Rivul can work across scholarly Papers results, items in the Library, or the current paper. The research workspace keeps supporting sources beside the answer so the researcher can inspect the evidence, compare passages, and revise the question without losing context.

This is useful for mapping a topic, comparing methods, locating limitations, and finding disagreements that deserve closer reading. An answer provides a route into the evidence, and the researcher remains responsible for judging it.

Draft beside the source

Rivul's editor supports structured manuscripts, tables, equations, links, inline citations, autosave, and recovery from pending drafts. Grounded autocomplete can suggest a continuation from available source text. Other writing actions can rewrite, shorten, expand, proofread, polish, propose a title or abstract, and help draft related work.

Suggested changes appear for review. Rivul does not silently replace the author's prose, and a generated sentence does not become a citation unless a real source record is attached and the writer accepts it. The author keeps control over both language and attribution.

Make citation part of writing

Citation work is easier when it happens at the moment a source is used. Rivul can insert a reference from the library into the draft, preserve its source record, renumber citations by first appearance, and keep the bibliography in sync as the manuscript changes.

Writers can preview IEEE, ACM, APA, MLA, and Chicago styles and export BibTeX. Rivul also normalizes DOI and arXiv identifiers, deduplicates records, and surfaces preprint or retraction information when the underlying providers make it available.

Check the manuscript before it leaves the workspace

A polished sentence can still be weakly supported. Rivul can flag unsourced claims, compare a claim with its cited passage, show evidence coverage, and help organize findings in an evidence matrix. Review tools can also surface contradictions, gaps, citation quality concerns, notation inconsistencies, reproducibility questions, and the manuscript's AI footprint.

Preflight checks look for incomplete sections, placeholders, unresolved citations, reference problems, and selected format requirements. These checks support editorial judgment; they do not determine whether a scientific claim is true or guarantee that a manuscript is ready for publication.

Export work you can keep

Research should not be trapped in the tool used to create it. Rivul exports Word documents, IEEEtran LaTeX, Markdown, plain text, BibTeX, and IEEE source packages. Word export preserves structured tables, equations, and figures without asking a language model to rebuild them.

The result is a document the researcher can continue editing, submit to a collaborator, or move into an established academic publishing workflow.
