Insert a citation

1. Click Cite in the editor (⌘K).

2. Search the literature index or your library.

3. Insert the record. The marker and the bibliography line come from stored metadata, not from model prose.

Sources

Search and lookup use Crossref, DataCite, arXiv, OpenAlex, and Semantic Scholar (S2), depending on the query. Find papers uses the same indexes. A result that cannot be resolved stays out of the bibliography.

Styles

Cite offers five styles: IEEE, ACM, APA 7, MLA 9, and Chicago (author-date). Changing the style updates in-text markers and the reference list together.

First-citation numbering

Numeric styles number references by first appearance in the manuscript, not by the order they were added to the reference list. Cut, paste, or delete a marker and the numbers recompute.

Hover cards

Hover a citation marker to see the formatted source card. Click the marker to scroll to the live References section.

Live bibliography

Click References to insert a live bibliography node, or insert it from the Cite popover. The list updates as you add or remove citations.

No invented references

The model does not author bibliography records. Markers resolve to stored Crossref, DataCite, arXiv, or equivalent metadata. If a record is missing, the marker renders as [?].
