This page states what text leaves your account when you use AI. The Privacy policy and AI-use disclosure govern if they differ.

Your own API key
AI features need your own API key for one AI provider: Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Mistral, or Meta. Connect it in Settings → AI provider. The key is stored encrypted with AES-256-GCM, used only for your requests, and deleted when you remove it. Only one key is stored at a time: saving a key for another provider replaces the previous key and deletes it.
Your provider bills you directly for what you use. Rivul AI pays for no model calls and has no fallback key, so AI features stay off until you connect one.
Search papers, Rivul MCP and REST search, the Library, Document OCR, Transcribe, Listen, citing, references and export work with no AI key; only AI features (Ask Rivul, Research briefs, agent runs, PDF chat, editor actions, autocomplete) use your own key. Research still searches and shows papers without a key; only its written brief needs one.
What is sent
When you send an AI request, Rivul AI sends the relevant draft excerpt and any library passages used for grounding to the AI provider you connected, using your key.
Adding a PDF sends nothing to an AI provider. Library search runs over the extracted text inside Rivul AI.
A research agent run sends your question, the agent's goal and instructions, and the search results and library excerpts it selects to the AI provider you connected. An agent's web search runs through that provider and receives only your question and the titles of published papers from the Rivul Index.
What is not done
Rivul AI does not train models on manuscripts or library files. Rivul AI does not sell that content. How your AI provider handles what it receives is governed by that provider's API terms.
Bibliography and data portability
Your reference records remain available in Settings → Account → Download export. Formatted manuscript downloads, including LaTeX, BibTeX, and Word, are included for every account.
